Albergo l'Ostelliere - Villa Sparina Resort
9.2/10 on 250 reviews
Genoa, the capital city of Liguria, its sea and its airport are just 40km from L’Ostelliere Hotel, which is situated in the heart of the important Piemonte wine-growing area of Gavi.
The 28 bedrooms and suites are all very spacious and furnished with real period pieces, cleverly combined with contemporary furniture which comes from all over Europe. All the bedrooms have the most modern amenities and the twelve suites are dedicated to the 11 municipalities of the DOCG of Gavi (Bosio – Capriata d’Orba – Carrosio – Francavilla Bisio – Gavi – Novi Ligure – Parodi Ligure – Pasturana – San Cristoforo – Serravalle Scrivia – Tassarolo) and, the twelfth, to the most important local wine: “Monterotondo”.
The “La Gallina” Restaurant spoils guests with culinary delicacies and, in the small garden orchard with the bar counter positioned in front of the panorama, you can savour an aperitif in a really unique way. Among the fragrances of the field flowers and aromatic herbs, it is a real flavor of the past, rediscovering the elation of contact with nature.
Furthermore, the hotel has cooking courses, courses for getting to know wine and the wine-harvest, excursions to look for truffles, guided visits with tastings to the “Villa Sparina” wine cellars and to the Gavi wine producing companies. And the various meeting salons for 10 to 500 people are perfect for weddings or private parties. The park is an oasis of relaxation with its solarium and outdoor swimming pool. For your well-being and an excellent physical shape, there are also a Turkish bath, massages, yoga and gym courses – with personal trainer on request.
Two Golf Clubs within 5km, trekking, hot-air balloon flights with a panoramic tour over the castles of Barolo, horse-riding excursions, shopping in the Serravalle Outlet 3kms away or in Valenza, “City of gold and jewellery”, the “Campionissimi” Museum or the Gulf of Tigullio and Portofino, the famous Liguria town can all be added to the vast list of things to do.

His Opinion: The above comments are ONLY valid for the Hotel comfort & location, Hotel employees service mindset and hospitality. The Hotel is great !
HOWEVER, when it comes to the restaurant, I would rate it EXTREMELY POOR for the service mainly. I am sorry for the Chef who makes a good cuisine, for the wine list which is interesting, but all this is litterally destroyed by the extremelly poor service, starting by the Chief waiter.
There is a nice formula for a light dinner, with cold cuts, cheeses, and then small warm dishes. This is great, but how can you accept to be obliged to ask more than three times to get a glass of red wine after a first and unique glass of wite wine (wine is included in the formula). After 45 minutes waiting time, we nearly have been obliged to beg and knie on the floor to finally get one glass of red wine. All in all, we had two poor little glasses of wine for the entire evening.....
Also, for this light dinner, it took us more than 3 hours to get to the end. What a shame in term of service. And we apparently were not the only one to complain that evening.
The following day we made a booking for a complete dinner in the restaurant, ping to get a better experience. While enjoying the apperetif in the garden, we asked for the men in order to choose our dishes. After 45 minutes waiting time and the aperetif nearly over, we were still expecting the waiter to bring the requested menu. This never happened, and I personnally had to stand up and get them by myself.
Also, the waiter served 2 glasses of sparkling wine from different bottles, one open from the day before I guess since you could not see any sparkling and bubles in the glass anymore, and the other from a fresh open bottle, with a lot of sparkling and bubbles, like a good champagne. When making the comment to the waiter, he trusted to tell us that those two glasses have been served out of the same bottle..... and not even proposed to replace the none sparkling glass with a new one.
And finally, we were there as a family with a kid of 10 years old and a baby. I hope you can imagne the torture for our two chldrens, to wait for three hours on a table for a light dinner and experiencing another bad moment the day after in the restaurant.
What could have been a great and wonderfull experience at Albergo l'Ostelliere (great hotel, great hotel staff, great food), turn out to be more a nightmare, and I say it again, because of the extremelly poor service level in the restaurant.

His Opinion: The rural setting is lovely and the room is well-appointed and generous in size. However, the services are ALL extra. Even an extra (and rather high) charge for bicycles. The spa is strangely managed (by appointment and nothing is ready to go). The pool closes in September. The WiFi does not work in the rooms either. We wanted to spend more time at the property to relax and unwind, but found ourselves driving around simply because staying put would cost so much extra money. Our next stop along the way was half the price for a room and had much more simply included.

His Opinion: Ein wunderschön gelegenes Haus in einer sehr gepflegten Park- und Gartenlandschaft. Frühstücksangebot für die Klasse des Hauses und angesichts des Preisniveaus noch verbesserungsfähig.
