Sardinia amongst white dunes and palm trees – at Domus De Maria, just 300 metres from Chia beach - one of the most beautiful fine sand beaches on the south-western coast of Sardinia and close to a lagoon populated by pink flamingoes, is the Aquadulci Hotel, a 4-star resort which blends into the countryside around it: pale tints, basic lines and natural materials such as stone, wood and terracotta.
The 42 airy bedrooms are furnished in chic ethnic style and have every comfort; some with balconies overlooking the little garden, others with terraces and splendid sea views.
The restaurant specialises in fish dishes and exquisite traditional island dishes.
The hotel is in a strategic position for reaching the little bays with Caribbean colours. Just a small pathway separates the Mediterranean garden from the azure sea. It is here, in the south around Capo Spartivento with its lighthouse, just 108 miles from Tunisia, that Sardinia reveals its African soul: an expanse of palm trees and myrtles, sea, rocky coastline and white sand dunes.
On board Milmar, a two-masted wooden schooner, you can anchor at Porto Zafferano, with its infinite azure blue hues, or in front of the white half-moon shaped Porto Pino, with two high dunes sculpted by the wind at the back. You can go on excursions by bicycle or on a horse along the pathways among the hills covered with juniper trees and fragrant Mediterranean plants. A few kilometres away, you can discover the bay of Piscinni, Cala Cipolla or the enchanting beach of Tuerredda with a picturesque little island in front.
You can also play golf at Chia (just 500 metres distance, 18-holes) or at Is Molas (15km distance, 27-holes), practise scuba diving, kite-surfing or explore the thousands of not-to-be-missed places in this land of ancient culture: Bithia, the Phoenician city, Nora with Punic and Roman remains, ‘nuraghi’ and ‘menhir’ scattered over the countryside, the Is Cannoneris Nature Reserve populated by deer and wild boar, and the evocative western/cowboy-film canyons of Sulcis.
