The Buen Amor Castle also known as Villanueva de Canedo or Fonseca Castle was built before 1227 during the reign of King Alfonso IX, and later used as a fortress. The Castillo de Buen Amor honors the popular legend that it's actual name was given when the castle becomes the property of the Archbishop of Santiago, Don Alonso de Fonseca that lived there with his mistress Maria de Ulloa.
Recent studies show that in fact Don Alonso de Fonseca, cousin of the Archbishop and Bishop of Cuenca, Osma Avila acquired the castle in 1477 from Alfonso de Valencia, who had received the property as a donation from the Catholic Monarchs in return for having given them back the city of Zamora. Bishop Fonseca later transformes the Castle into his palace where he also lives with his mistress, Dona Teresa de las Cuevas, who gave him four children.
The fort has been declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931, and it's walls are 2.80 and 3.60 meters thick. It also covers an area of 3,000 m2 and has 4 towers in each of the vertices, aimed at the 4 cardinal points, one of them, the Tower of Homage, diagonally oriented, with 14 square feet of height.
The Castillo del Buen Amor is decorated with antique furniture and each room has been decorated differently offering all modern comforts while retaining the magic of its original structure.
The area that surrounds the castle is about116 Ha, and invites visitors to talk long and relaxing walks creating their own paths between oaks, poplars, elms and green vegatation.

His Opinion: nous avions réservé une chambre supérieure et à notre arrivée, une junior suite nous a été proposée. L'accueil fut des plus charmants, le restaurant est excellent, le personnel très professionnel. Très bel endroit,parfaitement entretenu.
